Tracker FAQ

This page provides information on the trackers and answers the common questions that riders are asking.
How do the trackers work?
The trackers are small devices that use satellites to locate your position at regular intervals, typically every 90 seconds. The location and time are then passed to our data server and stored on a database.
The transfer of information relies on the Vodafone mobile phone network, but when out of range the information is stored by the tracker until a signal is found. The tracker can store up to 3,000 points or over 30 hours of data - more than enough for your entire ride.
The tracker needs to stable and have a clear view of the sky; so it is best to tape the tracker to top bar of your bike.
Are they available and what's the cost?
Trackers are available to hire for the ride at £20. This includes the tracker hire, data transfer, map for online viewers to follow you and a GPX file for you to keep. Please note that riders are responsible for the safe return of the tracker. We reserve the right to charge for the replacement of any missing or damaged trackers, which at cost is £200.
How do I hire a tracker?
You can hire a tracker by logging into your Open Cycling entry and selecting Equipment, but you will need to do this before 16th June.
We currently have 40 trackers in total and over 300 riders, so if you are interested please don't leave it until the last minute.
How can my friends, family and supports see where I am?
We are currently working on the tracker mapping and there will be a link from http://www.opencycling.com for people to watch your progress. Friends and family will be able to view your progress can be viewed on the web, iPad or mobile phone. Two sample markers are shown on the route map.
Will you post the tracker out to me or will it be at the start?
We need to turn on and bag the tracker prior to the start, so the tracker will be available at the start of the ride and taped to your bike. Once you finish the tracker will then be removed from your bike.
Does it save the route?
The tracker will send your location and times to our servers. A couple of days after the ride we'll be able to provide you with a GPX file containing all the track information to keep as a souvenir.
If the above does not answer your question about the trackers, then please contact us for more information.
